Creek Bed Possibilities

The Great Lakes as a reservoir for the glacial rocks is not the only possibility for locating such items. Much of the soil deposited on the bedrock surrounding the lakes was formed by weathering of rock debris/material after the glacier retreat during the last glacial advance period. Creek beds will often reveal glacial rocks that will look vastly different from the bedrock (shale in the case of Western NY). Behind our house is a brook that meanders over the shale down to Cazenovia Creek. Glacial rock embedded within the soil above the creek is loosened during the Spring thaw and tumbles down to the creek bed. One such gem can be seen with swirls in its texture suggesting a gneiss type rock. We shall see how it looks after it is cut for slices prepared for coasters.
